Webbing: chair caning with open cane webbing
Webbing, also known as open cane webbing, is the style of chair caning everyone knows. Thin strips of rattan are woven through the existing holes in the chair frame. The distance between the holes determines the gauge of the weave itself. Chair caning in this technique is mainly done by hand.
Circles and sunbursts
With the webbing technique, circles (sunbursts) and fans can also be woven, for example in the backrest. This restores a chair to its original character, or gives it an accent of its own.
